Resumo: This talk presents a research journey from topology-based methods for analyzing fluid flows to questions of how visual representations support human understanding. It begins with work on topological techniques for analyzing complex flow fields, including time-dependent flows and discontinuities. These methods illustrate how visualization can reveal and communicate structure in complex data.
Taking this idea as a starting point, the second part of the talk shifts the focus from the structure in the data to the process of making sense of it. It explores visual sensemaking from a cognitive perspective, including metacognition, the role of visual cues, and techniques for visually enhancing text.
