The Licentiate in Mathematics has common entrance requirements and core with the Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. After the second semester, you can choose either, or both. The course aims to train Mathematics teachers for Elementary, Middle and High School, as well as future researchers and Higher Education teaching staff in the areas of Education/Mathematics Education, Mathematics and related areas. In addition, the skills and competences acquired throughout the course by compulsory and optional courses and extracurricular activities, prepare graduates to occupy positions in the labor market outside the academic environment or, by specialization courses afterwards, for example, in management school.

This program offers you:

  • solid background in Higher Mathematics and in general and specific pedagogical disciplines in Mathematics Education, which enables graduates access to the most competitive school network exams or to follow their graduate studies (Master´s and Doctorates) in various related sub-areas;
  • block formation of Physics subjects and in the areas of Computing and Numerical Calculation, enabling you to use the computer as a working tool;
  • ability to apply your knowledge in an innovative way, following the continuous evolution of teaching methodologies and technologies, as well as exact sciences, having an overall view of them.

 

WHAT WILL YOU STUDY?

Mathematics and ways to teach this subject! Seriously, you will see Mathematical Theories and their Applications, you will have courses in Calculus, Algebra and Geometry, as well as Complementary Physics and Numerical Calculus. Those who choose to pursue a Degree in Education will go into more depth in pedagogy, studying Educational Psychology, Didactics, Historical and Legal Aspects of Education, Methodologies and Teaching Practices in Mathematics and other subjects.

 

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Teaching Mathematics to Elementary and Middle School students or in Youth and Adult Education is the most common path. However, you can also work in school administration, as a pedagogical coordinator or director, by doing a specialization course. You could also pursue an academic career and work in Higher Education, or as a researcher in research centers, which are usually linked to universities in the various areas related to Mathematics or Education/Mathematics Education.

Other possibilities are to work in public or private companies, banks, brokers, finance, etc., or as researchers in related fields, such as Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, in the various areas of Engineering, after specializing in these areas, doing a Master's and Doctoral course.
